When the world "discovered" Japanese industry and its relevance to the emerging world economy in the 1970s, labor practices in Japan were much different than in other developed countries. Employment for life was a long-standing tradition. Those companies not honoring that tradition and those employees not taking advantage of it were viewed as operating counter to accepted norms and minimum standards of behavior. Fundamental Structural Changes Today, expectations are much different. Japans industry structure was forced to change in response to fiscal conditions, particularly in the wake of the Asian currency crisis of 1997. Whereas fiscal matters in business had been secondary to overriding cultural mor?s before the crisis, business survival has been the focus of efforts in recent years. Under pressure from other leading economies of the world, Japan has undergone legal and structural changes resulting in abandonment of long-standing traditions requiring that larger, stronger companies of any kiretsu organization support fiscally weaker ones, even to the detriment of the stronger organization. These changes have increased corporate accountability and have served to implement corporate governance on a level more consistent with practice in other developed nations. This is a direct influence of globalization in Japan, for leading world economies are so interlaced and interdependent as globalization progresses that structural weakness in one adversely affects not only that one, but other international systems as well. The concept of not carrying those superfluous to the needs of the organization has extended to Japans labor force as well.
