the United States and Mexico throughout much of their history. It was a war over boundaries, over possession of land, and a war that ultimately resulted in the United States gaining a great deal of land and the Mexicans left with very little. The following paper overviews aspects of this war. The Mexican-American War As mentioned, this particular war concerned the desire for land. On the part of the people of the United States more and more people were traveling west and many, if not most, of the people in the United States were of the opinion that they actually should control all the land they could touch. From coast to coast the American people believed that they could do a far better job at taking over the land than natives or Mexicans for they were more civilized, European, and educated (Lee, 2007). Lee calls it the Manifest Destiny in which the primarily Protestant nation felt it had a right to all the land. As the United States grew Texas became a troublesome region while President Polk apparently desired war so that more land, land that is now the United States, could be obtained (Lee). There were places that the new Americans wanted desperately, places like California and while the government tried to purchase California from Mexico, Mexico was surely not willing to sell a great portion of its land to a nation that they considered their enemy (Lee, 2007). Apparently the United States had attempted to buy California in 1835, when Texas and Mexico split, and then in 1845 (Lee, 2007).
