while people were afraid to give away personal information in the past, most people have realized that with that power of the Internet, ones life is an open book anyway. There are of course a few issues that people take pains to keep private. Social security numbers, driver license numbers and dates of birth are all tools that impersonators can use when stealing ones identity. Another thing that people want to keep under wraps is medical information. While this is the case, there are sometimes breaches in security. Web sites sell things from clothing to cars to medical test reports to credit reports, and so there are a lot of opportunities to steal valuable information. Some believe that regulation is the answer. If only the government would step in and monitor transactions, make laws to regulate the Internet so that such identify theft could not occur, the world would be a better place. Yet, whenever the government gets involved, the results are usually poor. The government is often one step behind in technology, so with government involvement one can be sure that criminals will get away with a lot. That is how nuclear secrets were stolen by Chinese spies. Clearly the Internet should remain unregulated by government. The marketplace should determine what safeguards individual companies should have in place in order to protect privacy rights. Businesses can perform such services more cheaply and better than government agencies can. Also, security is important to customers so businesses are sure to sign up with companies to help protect their data. There are a myriad of issues when addressing this broad topic.
