                                                    The majority of the public wrongly believe that loss of habitat in the Amazon is due in a large part to pollution, but studies show that this is only a  
                                                
                                                    small fragment of the reason for the destruction. Deforestation can occur in many ways and by many means, some direct, but most often indirectly caused by logging, agriculture, ever expanding  
                                                
                                                    human populations, mining, even tourism.         The constant degrading and destroying of habitats and the over exploitation of these habitats and species have  
                                                
                                                    disrupted the cycle of rise and decline amongst all of life on the planet, it would seem. Wilson states that until mans coming individual species had a natural cycle of  
                                                
                                                    a million years, then they either adapted, became obsolete and/or died out. "They disappeared naturally at the rate of about one species per million per year, and newly evolved species  
                                                
                                                    replaced them at the same rate, maintaining a rough equilibrium," Wilson states. However, this is no longer the case. The rate of extinction has increased exponentially while the development of
