is to produce hormones. These hormones are the bodys chemical messengers. The pituitary gland, the thyroid, and the adrenal glands are among the more commonly known endocrine glands. The endocrine system is in control of much of our physiology. Endocrine glands differ from exocrine glands like salivary and sweat glands because they are more vascular and have no ducts (Tortora and Derrickson, 2005). The hormones that they produce are stored in their vacuoles or granules until it is released into the body to circulate through the blood vessels (Tortora and Derrickson, 2005). Consider, for example, the pancreas. The pancreas is formed of specialized cells, one type of which is the pancreatic iselets (Tortora and Derrickson, 2005). These endocrine cells are located between the exocrine cells of the pancreas. They, like all endocrine glands, secrete their products directly into the blood stream rather than through ducts. The major product of the pancreatic iselets is insulin which functions in controlling carbohydrate metabolism (Tortora and Derrickson, 2005). This polypeptide lowers blood sugar, increases glycogen storage in liver, and acts to stimulate protein synthesis (Tortora and Derrickson, 2005). The functions of the pancreatic islets are regulated by blood glucose concentrations (Saladin, 2007). Glycogen is a polypeptide which is also produced by the pancreatic islets (Saladin, 2007). It stimulates the liver to break down glycogen and increases blood sugar (glucose) concentrations (Saladin, 2007). It is regulated by blood glucose and amino acid concentrations (Saladin, 2007).
