Crime is an ever present problem in our society. Unfortunately, juveniles commit a significant percentage of that crime. Just as
there is no one reason why juveniles commit crime, there is no one way to either prevent juvenile crime or to most effectively deal with the juveniles that enter the
criminal justice system. There is not even a consistent means by which juveniles are tried in that system. While, in theory at least, juveniles are to be tried in
juvenile court as opposed to adult court, there is a growing trend toward increasing the use of waivers or remanding juveniles to adult court for processing. It is important to
remember, however, that juvenile court was created for a reason. The societal implications of abolishing juvenile court would undoubtedly be far reaching and unacceptable.
The statistics that we normally turn to to illustrate an issue are somewhat lacking when it comes to juvenile crime and the number of juveniles that are tried
in juvenile court as opposed to adult court. The statistics that do exist can be quite dated. They can also be misleading and even inaccurate.
While there are national databases for such statistics, all incidents of juvenile delinquency are not entered into these databases. We can, in some cases at least, turn to state
