Interpersonal communication encompasses physical and sociological considerations but it also encompasses psychological considerations. Without effective communication we would fail in practically every one of our social
endeavors. Good communication is a primary component of all social interaction. This communication can, of course, occur on a variety of levels and include both verbal and non-verbal components.
In many aspects of our communication with one another, however, we find ourselves in a sort of performance mode, a mode through which our precise manner of communication shapes
that specific period of time and circumstance. Volumes of literature have been produced that emphasize the importance of interpersonal communication on a societal level. Goffmans
"The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" is a particularly classic example. In it Goffman (37) uses the analogy of drama and the stage to present his theories of
"dramaturgy", for example. He explains human interactions as a theatrical performance, a performance complete with individual scripts, settings, and performances which make up an individuals daily life. In
a follow-up work, Goffman (12) elaborates on terms such as "props" as critical elements in the roles we are playing. "Props", along with such aspects of our interaction with
others as our verbal exchanges and body language form our self image. Each individual, of course, can have a diversity of self-images. Ones self image in regard
to their home life can, and most often does, differ from ones professional self image. A female attorney, for example, might also be a mother and a wife.
