Essay / Research Paper Abstract

7 pages in length. Man has long believed that his presence cannot be the only one to exist in the vastness of space, and this speculation has been rewarded by the recent discovery of extra-solar planets hinting at the possibility of other life forms. For the time being, however, uncovering eight new planets has given scientists the motivation to continue such pursuits. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

other life forms. For the time being, however, uncovering eight new planets has given scientists the motivation to continue such pursuits. Some of the planets, all of which were orbiting nearby stars, are particularly intriguing due to their Earth-like circular orbits, a feature scientists look upon as a potential indicator of life-sustaining ability "elsewhere in the galaxy" (Anonymous, 2001, p. PG). The primary importance of this aspect is that the vast majority of star-orbiting planets are typically unconventional in appearance and sport elongated orbits; these three, however, are too much like Earths circular composition to ignore the possibility, no matter how remote. "Planetary systems with circular orbits are more likely to have an Earth-like world in a stable habitable zone where conditions are right for life" (Anonymous, 2001, p. PG). These "large gas giants" (Anonymous, 2001, p. PG) support quite a range in mass, which - when compared with Jupiter - vary from nearly one to fully ten times its size. Moreover, scientists now believe that such extra-solar planets are quite a bit more common than once believed, with the capacity for various forms of life depending upon temperature and light availability (Wilford, 1996). According to British astronomer Dr Alan Penny, this discovery is much more significant than many people realize: "What this means is that were starting to see a different class of planet from the ones weve seen before, which are looking much more like the planets in our own solar system...Its as though weve got a zoo with various cages...Weve had the technology to look in the first cage - big planets with close-in orbits...In the distance are solar systems just like our own...Were now reaching the cages in between with giant planets not ...
