to those doctrines preached by other Christian faiths, there is at least one unique belief that appears to be isolated in the Catholic faith. In examining the various beliefs of Catholicism, in relationship to life after death, this paper will also discuss any relationships that exist between life, both before and after death, and also any great doctrinal changes that may be occurring as we move into the next millennium. For the most part, as mentioned, the Catholic faith is merely a sect of Christian believers. In this context, the faithful follow the doctrine and the teachings of the Bible and as such believe in life after death occurring in Heaven beside God. All Christians believe that when an individual dies, if they have bee faithful to God and followed his word, they will be accepted into the kingdom of Heaven. If they have been unfaithful and evil in intent and action, they will most assuredly spend their eternity in Hell at the side of the Devil. While there are obviously many different ways in which Christian faiths interpret what Heaven and Hell are, essentially the basic belief is that in Heaven the individual is in the presence of God and will live out eternity in blissful spiritual peace, while those damned to Hell will live out eternity in misery as punishment for disobedience to God and his Word. Where the Catholic faith tends to drift, in relationship to Heaven and Hell, lies in an age old doctrine that has no support from any Biblical scripture or teaching (McBrien). This unique doctrine teaches of a place known as Purgatory.
