Yet, he was also a man who was perhaps aware of, and saddened at, the fact that with his discoveries Europeans would invade and take control, leaving once wondrously native regions at the mercy of the white man. The following paper examines the explorations of Captain Cook and also examines the racial tensions that exist even to this day in Hawaii as a result of Captain Cooks exploration. Captain Cook James Cook was born in 1728 in Yorkshire (Captain Cook, 2005). "At 27 he enlisted in the Royal Navy and soon became boatswain on the 60-gun ship Eagle. Four years later he surveyed the St Lawrence River, Newfoundland, in preparation for the capture of Quebec, and for three summers he conducted further surveys of the St Lawrence and the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland coasts" (Captain Cook, 2005). It was in 1768 that he took his first Pacific voyage, the first of several journeys that would result in the charting of the entire ocean (Captain Cook, 2005). He traveled, through all journeys combined, from New Zealand to the Arctic (Captain Cook, 2005). And, his charts were not only new, but incredibly accurate and are still even used today (Captain Cook, 2005). His journeys covered over 8 years wherein he charted numerous islands that were previously unknown to the outside world (Captain Cook, 2005). The first voyage was on the H.M. Bark Endeavour and its goal was to "observe the passage of Venus over the disc of the Sun from Tahiti and then to search for a Great Southern Continent south of Tahiti" (Captain Cook, 2005).
