Remarkably, Augustine was not a Christian in his youth (Fisher, 2006). Augustine spent a great many years in his youth finding the philosophy he would live by for the rest of his life. He tried astrology and joined the Manichees, a religious sect (Holy Spirit Parish, 2007). Manichaeism was "a Persian dualistic philosophy" (Island of Freedom, n.d.). This sect was popular throughout the Western Roman Empire and Augustine, at first, believed it provided the basis for forming a "philosophical and ethical system" (Island of Freedom, n.d.). He would later preach strongly against this group (Island of Freedom, n.d.). He became a Christian at age 30 after meeting St. Anselm in Milan and subsequently returned to Africa where he would become Bishop of Hippo and where he wrote Confessions (Holy Spirit Parish, 2007). At that point, his life became one of devotion and of seeking truth, which is illustrated in Confessions as he recounts his wayward years and his enlightenment. Augustines philosophy was developed from his own years of experience along with the influence of Plato and Anselm . He talks about seeking truth and wisdom consistently throughout the text. For Augustine, "Truth is one, and God is Truth" (Island of Freedom, n.d.). Wisdom is the trait that gives "knowledge of Truth, so the quest for Truth is a quest for wisdom" (Island of Freedom, n.d.). As one seeks deep within oneself for wisdom and Truth, one will always find Christ (Island of Freedom, n.d.). He takes this further, God is live of your life.
