However, it is Newtonian physics and the worldview of the Enlightenment that produced the modern business world and its vision of reality as quantifiable. In a similar manner, Wheatley points out that the "new science" describes a very different version of reality; one in which there are no "recipes or formulas, no checklists or expert advice that describe reality" (Wheatley 9). In other words, Wheatley, first of all, explains how the world is a much more complicated place than the one envisioned by Newton, and secondly, she shows how this new scientific understanding impacts our understanding of organizations and how they function. In the first chapters of her book, Wheatley introduces the new sciences and how they affect our understanding of reality, that is, "the way the world works" (Wheatley xv). She also addresses how past conditioning has limited the ways in which people can appreciate the way that order is created within a living system. In Chapters two through four, the author explores the mysteries of quantum physics and how this information holds implications for organizational practices. Wheatley describes the typical process of an organizational meeting, one in which business leaders create charts, statistics and graphs that have at their core the notion that an organization is like a complex machine that can be understood and "fixed" by imposing a pattern from the outside, as dictated by the Newtonian worldview. The author then goes on to describe a vastly different view of the world, the view of quantum physics, in which the laws of cause and effect evaporate and nothing is as it first seems.
