Twenty years ago Cancun was virtually unknown; it was "just a Mayan name, a deserted, sun-drenched island off the northeast tip of the Yucatan peninsula" ("About Cancun"). Today, the resort is a vacation destination that is popular with visitors from all over the world, but especially Americans ("About Cancun"). Cancun is an island; its approximately 16 miles long and 200 feet above sea level at its highest point ("About Cancun"). Cancun is located in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, which is approximately 550 miles south of Miami, "in the South-eastern part of Mexico" ("About Cancun"). The coastline of the island measure approximately 540 miles; there are numerous smaller coral islands near Cancun itself, and there is a barrier reef near the island, the "second largest in the world," after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia ("About Cancun"). Cancun has some of the loveliest beaches to be found anywhere; they are suitable for snorkeling and scuba diving ("About Cancun"). The island is L-shaped, and enclosed within the arms of the "L" a lagoon that is ideal for water skiing and sailing ("About Cancun"). For those people who prefer ocean sports, the waters around Cancun are ideal for diving and deep-sea fishing ("About Cancun"). The waters are gorgeous, ranging in color from turquoise and light green near the shore to a horizon of blue-violet ("About Cancun").
