Von Huben 11/2010 Please Introduction Viktor Frankl wrote a book about his experiences in the Nazi concentration camps that has become a classic, and a testament to the human spirit. But it also shows what survival entails; its not always as noble as it seems. This paper touches on the book very briefly, then considers Frankls theory of logotherapy, and finally devises a case study to which it could be applied. Discussion Frankl writes that the extreme hardship of life in the camps acted as its own kind of "selection" mechanism (this being the term used to designate the way in which inmates were chosen for work or death). After a time, those who survived were the ones who were completely unscrupulous; "they were prepared to use every means, honest and otherwise ... in order to save themselves. We who have come back ... we know: the best of us did not return" (Frankl, 1984, p. 19). This last sentence is a poignant and disturbing reminder that survival in this environment really did come down to a battle with the winners being those that were the most ruthless rather than noble and self-sacrificing. But the thing that Frankl found most fascinating was that even in these extreme circumstances, people survived as long as they had something to live for. He also saw that there is no point at which a person is without choice; he can always decide how he will conduct himself. Will he become brutal and turn on his fellow prisoners like the Capos did?
