Introduction First published in 1961, Muriel Sparks "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" is set at a private girls school in the 1930s in Edinburgh Scotland. It is a story of an eccentric female teacher in the Junior Department of Marica Blaine School who not only refused to conform to her schools tight conservative expectations and even to societys expectations but encouraged her young students to do likewise. Her unorthodox ways earn her the dislike of her superiors but it also yields an almost cult-like following from her students. Miss Brodies unorthodox ways also ultimately result in her dismissal, however. It is a dismissal which can be attributed not to maliciousness but rather to the insight of one of her students. Discussion As the books title reveals, Miss Brodie is enjoying her "prime" years in the time she has with her young charges. While she has lost her youth she has gained experience, power and discernment, values which the teacher views as more precious than any other commodity. Of her young charges she takes specific notice of six of her students starting at the time they are approximately twelve years of age. These six become what is known as the "Brodie set" and serve in many ways as an extension of Miss Brodies own life, even as an extension of her own love life, even the more shady aspects of that love life such as her affair with the art teacher and choir master.
