to understand the issue in greater depth, in particular as regards the means by which secondary geothermic issues may ultimately impact the global warming trend in previously unseen ways. One
of the most significant of these discoveries is the finding that thawing permafrost throughout the Arctic regions of the world, itself a consequence of rising temperatures, may well be a
major contributor of greenhouse gases in the form of carbon dioxide and methane, thereby cyclically exacerbating the problem of global warming. This paragraph helps the student look at and analyze
the NY Times article. The New York Times recently published an insightful article on this very topic: "As Permafrost Thaws, Scientists Study the Risks", by Justin Gillis. In this article,
the basic scientific causes behind the phenomenon are explored. The author explains that the reason thawing permafrost releases methane and other greenhouse gasses is that permafrost itself consists of grasses
and other organic material that were frozen prior to entering a state of decomposition some 30 to 40,000 years ago, during the last ice age. With rising temperatures, this matter
is now decomposing and releasing carbon en masse. The article cites various studies and surveys which suggest that the amount of carbon gas released from thawing permafrost may account for
as much as 15 to 35% of that released annually by human activities. The dire significance of this trend is simply this: previously, it was thought that curbing or ceasing
