Additionally, there has also been the problem of the desired course material being offered at some distance from where the potential adult student lived and worked. Technology has, at last, has become so adaptable that practically anyone can learn anything, from anywhere. Of course, there are a few inherent negative qualities to this form of education, but these are by far offset by the opportunities afforded to adult learners by current technological innovations. As higher education moves forward into the twenty-first century, todays communication technology, particularly video-teleconferencing distance education (VTDE), is enabling "institutions of higher education to reach" adult populations in a variety of settings such as "business, colleges, hospitals and prisons" (Niemi, et al 66). One of the specific advantages of technologically oriented education is that adults living in rural communities can now receive course offerings similar to those people who live in urban areas (Niemi, et al 66). Additionally, courses that used to be offered only in one location due to possibility of low enrollment can now be offered simultaneously to learners at several distant site locations (Niemi, et al 66). A leading innovator in adult education, Malcolm Knowles, considered adult education to encompass all the experiences of adult men and women from which they acquire knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes, interests or values (Donlevy; Donlevy 1).
