The remarkable thing about this observation is that this was long before computers found their way into classroom, or even homes, as the concept of inexpensive personal computers was still science fiction at that time. The creator of innumerable computer programs that teach children, Paperts book Mindstorms, which was first published in 1980, has become a major instructional took for thousands of teachers who seek creative ways to use computer technology in the classroom (Mindstorms, 2005). This text recounts Paperts invention of LOGO, the first "child-friendly" computer language (Mindstorms, 2005). In the early 1970s, Papert set out to develop a "new and different approach" to computer use in education, and the result, LOGO, succeeds at encouraging rigorous thinking about mathematics (Moinar, 1997, p. 63). Papert wanted the program to be accessible to young children, so he designed in a manner that makes it easy to express simple tasks (Moinar, 1997. Rather than teach mathematics, Papert argues that LOGO teaches children how to be mathematicians (Moinar, 1997). Semple (2000) points out that Papert devised the programming language LOGO specifically to develop the thinking processes described by the influential child psychologists Jean Piaget. Papert (1999) quotes Einstein ass saying that Piagets theory of child development is "so simple that only a genius could have thought of it." Piaget, very simply, proposed that children do not think like adults (Papert, 1999). This observation is intrinsic to Paperts learning philosophy.
