nursing care naturally indicates the client/patient, but this concept also encompasses groups of individuals. In other words, "person" refers to the individual(s) receiving nursing care (Tourville and Ingalls, 2003). Traditionally,
the medical model of healthcare has interpreted this concept strictly in terms of medical needs. However, nursing literature substantiates the idea that care should be holistic and address all of
a client/patients needs, including ones that are cultural, emotional and spiritual. It has been argued in nursing literature that, in order to provide exemplary nursing care for older patients,
nurses should understand these patients thoroughly, "who they are, where they live and with whom, their current health status and lifestyle, and their hopes and needs for the future"
(Smith, 2006, p. 16). While the context of the research conducted by Smith (2006) is in reference to older patients, it can easily be argued that this perspective is also
applicable to a general nursing perspective, as the holistic approach taken in Smiths qualitative study is founded on first establishing a solid nursing relationship built on trust (Smith, 2006). This
