Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 3 page essay that analyzes Flaubert's masterpiece from the perspective of how it engages the interest of the reader from a writer's perspective. The writer argues that in creating Emma Bovary, Flaubert fashioned a timeless character who epitomizes the pain of women who believe too much in fairy tale romance and that a white knight will come to solve all their problems. In the hands of a lesser talent, Emma could have come across as simply shallow and supercilious. However, Flaubert shows her as tragic, suffering intensely from her lack of insight into her own character and the true nature of reality. It is this primarily this aspect of the novel that engages the writer's instinct in the reader, as Flaubert expertly manipulates the details of Emma's story to convey her romantic perspective and how this leads to her downfall. The first theme that grabs the interest of this writer/reader is Flauberts realization of the powerlessness of women during this era. Throughout the novel, the men in Emmas life have the power to change her life either for the better or worse, but Emma is powerless to effect such a change herself. Having allowed her romanticism to obscure her perception as to the character of the man she marries, Emma is essentially trapped in this marriage. During Flauberts time, women of Emmas class were expected to be ornamental. Rather than being regarded as full-fledged adults, they were regarded both by law and culture as more akin to children in their intellect and capabilities. When this combined with the romanticism of the period, Flaubert demonstrates that this culturally prescribed paradigm makes for a tragic combination, as Emma fails to mature.
