Umberto Saba, for example, has only a remote connection to Collins and the Irish cause, while Irish poet W. B. Yeats was actively involved in the cause of Irish independence. Umberto Saba, noted Italian poet, was originally a native of Trieste (Ormsby, 2000). As noted by Howe (2002), writing about Trieste is rather like calculating the degrees of separation between strangers. With a little ingenuity, one can finds connections between any of the great figures of modernism and this Adriatic city (Howe, 2002). This is because that it was in the city of Trieste that "Umberto Saba lived and wrote...(his) masterpieces;... Marinetti preached his doctrine of Futurism, and James Joyce taught English at the Berlitz School...finished Dubliners, and wrote A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and part of Ulysses" (Howe, 2002, p. 31). While Irish, James Joyce was never directly involved with the cause of Irish independence. "Flag-waving nationalism was not to his taste" (Joyces religion and politics, 2003). However, his brothers memoir show that Joyce regarded independence as part of the larger, independence that he addresses in his writing. Joyces brother, Stanislaus, records that in April of 1907, in a conversation with Joyce questioned, "Do you not think Ireland has a right to govern itself and is capable of doing so?" (Joyces religion and politics, 2003). During the ten years that Joyce spent in Trieste, he wrote nine articles concerning the fight for Irish independence for a local newspaper.
