and Frederick Douglass. Harriet Ann Jacobs wrote her biography, titling it "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl." Douglass is titled "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass." Bearing in mind that these works are incredibly extensive, presenting us with many people and many different situations, we offer the following paper which examines the life of a wife of a slave holder in each piece. While the works may have more than one wife of a slaveholder, the paper focuses on one from each. Jacobs In the beginning of Jacobs story we see that Jacobs was a young girl and was owned by a woman, not a man. In this she had incredibly fond memories. And, in contrast, her later experiences with the wives of slaveholders were horrible and destructive in many ways. The most important wife/mistress that we see in Jacobs story is that of Mrs. Flint. Harriet had been approached by Mr. Flint for at least a year, as he made incredibly horrible comments and suggestive comments, telling her that he owned her and there was nothing she could do. And, if she did tell he promised to kill her. Now, while Harriet never directly says that he raped her and forced her into acts, there is enough information to assume that this is what occurred. And, if it didnt it was surely to occur. Harriet tells us, "I had entered my sixteenth year, and every day it became more apparent that my presence was intolerable to Mrs. Flint. Angry words frequently passed between her and her husband" (Jacobs 51). While the outward premise of the argument revolved around how he did not punish Harriet, nor would he allow others to punish her, Harriet knew the argument went much deeper than that. ...
