Nigeria and New Guinea are two countries that have experienced significant levels of human rights violations in the midst of specific political actions, and these violations have been brought to light in hopes that the actions of other countries will create an avenue for change. Nigeria has had a dismal record for jailing political opponents and allowing free reign of the security forces for the government (Whitelaw 33). It has been demonstrated that within the scope of the existing government, people suspected of heresy, or even people who voice political dissatisfaction can be shot without cause (Whitelaw 33). The major element behind the human rights violations in Nigeria is the control of the ruler, General Sani Abacha, who took control of the government of Nigeria in 1993 following the annulment of an election process and the essential end of democracy in that region (Anonymous 46). In order to understand the human rights violations in Nigeria, it is first necessary to understand the process by which Abacha took control. In 1993, over 14 million Nigerians came out and voted from Chief Moshood K.O. Abiola and Abiola won the national election (Jaffrey 36). But Muslin military forces from the North called for an annulment of the democratic process that led to Abiolas election, and an interim government was set in place as a result (Jaffrey 36). Within a year, Abiola, having declared himself the rightful president of Nigeria, was imprisoned for treason and Abacha had taken essential control of the country through military force (Jaffrey 36).
