supports the theories of Freud and demonstrates a cure for a phobia following correct management. However, it I also a case that may indicate flaws within Freuds psychoanalytical paradigms, as at age nineteen, the boy has grown into a well adjusted adult, but does not even have a memory of the events from his childhood recorded in the case, a possible contradiction to the expected outcome. The study of Little Hans analyses a phobia in a five-year old boy and is interesting as most of the material for the case study came from the boys father a friend of Freuds, who was a strong supporter of Freud. Freud uses this as a classical case of castration anxiety and fear of the father and an oedipal complex that manifested as a phobia to support his earlier work. Hanss father had kept a record of the development of his son, allowing us a detailed account of the development of the phobia and its eventual resolution. To examine this case we will begin with the background information on little Hans. The anxiety issues will then be examined followed by consideration of the way these were analysed and interpreted by Freud. It is only with this understanding we can take a more critical look at the case. 2. Little Hanss background and history Little Hans was born in 1903 to a father who was fascinated by psychoanalysis. The time that Hans was born coincided with the time that Freud was requesting his followers and acquaintances to gather data on the sexual life of young children.
