full significance of crossing the 38th parallel, it is necessary to understand the previous war history and the political objectives as they were originally conceived. Total global conflict
had ended just five years earlier with the end of World War II. The Korean War began the shift from a total war effort toward the trend to a limited
engagement scenario. The process of balancing limited political objectives against the tendency of military conflict to escalate in intensity is a process that is ongoing even today. It is also
a process which the American people have yet to feel completely comfortable with. (Drew; Snow 20) This was not the first war that the United States had fought which
was limited in terms of severity. Both the War of 1812 and the Spanish-American War were quick and decisive. (Drew; Snow 20) However, the officers who conducted the Korean
conflict had already been steeped in the total wars of the twentieth century. Their thinking was still adjusted for the development and preparation of a total war effort whose main
objectives are the total annihilation of the enemys military ability and occupation of his territory. In the Korean War, the political objectives were not that broad. These limited objectives resulted
in friction between the military and political leaderships. Neither group was expecting such a disagreement which also promoted ill will and inefficiency in the conduct of the hostilities. The original
