SEXUAL HARASSMENT Of the many issues community policing addresses, one that stands out is that of sexual harassment, a problem that is alive and well on virtually every college campus across the country. In spite of the legal ramifications that accompany even the slightest inkling of nuisance, the threat of sexual harassment - defined as "sexual advance; request for sexual favors; or any other verbal, physical or visual behavior of a sexual nature" (University Policy on Sexual Harassment) - still remains a significant concern among university students to the point where community policing has become a necessary evil. College campuses are forever attempting to address the problem in ways that will not only deal with offenders once the crime has been committed but that will also avert if from occurring in the first place. Indeed, campus administrators are more than aware of the extenuating circumstances that arise on account of student sexual harassment. "Education is the best hope for addressing and preventing sexual harassment by establishing effective sexual harassment policies and grievance procedures, and creating educational interventions and systemic institutional change" (Hutter 27). Perhaps fifty years ago, one would not make the correlation between college and sexual harassment; to be sure, institutions of higher education were places where young adults were able to seek out their personal and professional goals within a safe and secure environment.
