to have enormous talent is not enough to ensure success. Beethoven was born in to a musical family that had connections at court. His father and his grandfather were singers at the court of the local prince, the Elector Max Friedrich (Brown 3). Yet, Beethovens early family life was not happy, due to his fathers addiction to alcohol. This caused young Ludwig to have to take over the support of his mother and younger brothers at a very early age. At eleven, he held the post of assistant organist in the court chapel (Burk 2). Beethovens first visit to Vienna occurred when he was seventeen. A visit was arranged, which enabled him to play before Mozart (Machlis 219). The young Beethoven impressed Mozart so much that the latter told his friends, "Keep an eye on him?he will make noise in the world some day" (Machlis 219). Arrangements were made a few years later for Beethoven to study with Haydn in Vienna at the Electors expense (Machlis 219). Thus, it can be seen that Beethoven gained a foothold in Viennese society at a very early age. A foothold was all he needed as Beethovens powers as a pianist literally took the music-loving Viennese aristocracy by storm (Machlis 219). The young Beethoven was welcomed into the greatest houses in Vienna by the "powerful patrons" whose names subsequently appeared in the dedications of his work?names such as Prince Lichnowsky, Prince Lobkowitz, Count Razumovsky, etc. (Machlis 219; Sonneck 119). The brother of the Emperor, Archduke Rudolph, became his pupil and devoted friend (Machlis 219).
