When recorded, an interview has the potential to make an indelible mark in linear time, holding and caressing a part of life that can only be remembered by feeling. Through incorporating words and relaying specific events, the time becomes real. For the reader, the account appears credible, particularly if the writer relays the story in an entertaining fashion. That said, when examining Stud Terkels The Good War: An Oral History of World War II, it is easy to become immersed in an exciting historical period. In a Chapter called "D-Day and All That," Terkel interviews several individuals who were there and who could provide a human face to events. The chapter includes a variety of stories. One of those comes from a man by the name of Elliott Johnson. Johnson relays events to Terkel that are moving. He says: "I went back to my foxhole and I was suddenly drained. It was about one-thirty in the morning. I had to stay on duty until two. Ed was to come and relieve me. I couldnt stay awake. I was just plain exhausted. We never turned the crank or rang the bell on the telephone. When you are an officer - and this included the top noncoms- you went to sleep with your headset at your head" (Terkel 254). Most people can identify with being thoroughly tired. They have had experiences staying up all night with a colicky baby or being called in the middle of the night to go to a hospital. Emergencies have a way of prompting one to stay up anyway. But for Johnson, this was a way of life, at least for a little while. And while the anecdote of being tired is all too familiar the story would go ...
