but the legend of Aziyade or Sherazade have lasted through the centuries. The original Arabian Nights stories, according to most experts, are extremely old, dating back as far as the ninth century. Most scholars agree, however, that they were probably older than that, since prior to the ninth century most of the history was not written, but rather, oral in nature. The tales, whether handed down, or written, all tell the tale of an incredible woman and her special gift for telling stories and for making herself indispensable to those in authority over her. The tale of Aziyade is one of the older tales. Aziyade was one of many harem girls. She met and befriended writer and novelist Pierre Loti, who, rumor has it, fell madly in love with her. Their clandestine meetings are legendary. Thus, it would explain why many of Lotis early novels are tragic romances that take place in such exotic and foreign locations such as India and Turkey. His novels would have been considered racy during his day and age since he emphasized many of the sensual and sexual aspects of the culture and of his relationship with Aziyade. From what many can piece together, Aziyade did really exist. She was a Circassian slave owned by an old Turkish nobleman. She was converted to Islam, but never seems to have forgotten her roots. Aziyade is reported to have had piercing green eyes and dark looks that were quite striking. She and Loti had a relationship which was chronicled in his personal diary, for many years.
