1911 that the Nestor Company opened a film studio in an old bar that sat at the corner of Gower and Sunset ("A Short," 2005). Not too long after that D. W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille started to make movies in an area that was drawn to the community due to its desirable climate and spaciousness ("A Short," 2005). Eventually, restaurants, banks and clubs would emerge and the film industry would begin to do well through the 1930s ("A Short," 2005). As they say, the rest is history. Hollywood is the lifeblood of the film industry. Soon after Hollywoods start, the cold war would be upon America. The expression "cold war" was used for the first time by a journalist who wrote a speech for financier Bernard Baruch in 1947 (Safire, 1993). Thus, Baruch testified before Congress as follows: "Let us not be deceived. Today we are in the midst of a cold war"(Safire, 1993, p.135). What he meant by that was that during the time there was an unspoken rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. There was a build up of arms under the theory that if each country had enough protection, no one country would be bold enough to make that first move. The cold war lasted roughly between 1945 and 1990 (Roberts, 1993). Thus, what happened is that there was a build up of nuclear arms in both countries. During those years, and especially during the 1950s, politicians would blacklist many of Hollywoods own (Lorence, 1999). It was a time that many remember as one that was difficult for the United States.
