A 7 page paper presenting a shift in the manner in which member nations fund UN operation. When the UN was less influential in the world, its support belonged to those nations most interested in the political influence they could gain from UN affiliation. Contributing 1/10 of 1 percent of GDP places no hardship on any member nation, yet it provides flexibility as national fortunes change. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

This is a 13 page paper discussing Henry Kissinger’s involvement in the negotiation of the Sinai Accords and the affects of the accords on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The Sinai I and II Accords between Egypt and Israel in 1974 and 1975 were largely the result of negotiation efforts made by U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in his step-by-step process aptly named “shuttle diplomacy” between the two countries. Kissinger spent over three years intervening between Egypt and Israel eventually finding concessions which resulted in Israel’s occupying army withdrawing from parts of the Egyptian Sinai. Kissinger did not want an American presence in the Sinai but eventually both sides agreed to Sinai II only if there was an American civilian presence and American funding for an Egyptian surveillance station to match the Israeli surveillance station on either side of the buffer zone. After Kissinger’s retirement in 1977, progress in the Middle East seemed to stall and negotiations were taken up by President Carter in 1978 with the development of the Camp David Accords. While Kissinger’s peace keeping efforts were applauded, several issues within the Middle East remained untouched including the U.S. non-recognition of Palestine despite its acceptance by the UN. This caused a great deal of additional tension in the area as many of the Arab nations preferred negotiations through the UN and not those initiated by the U.S. Conflicts still continue in the Middle East despite various peace accords over the years and Kissinger himself once commented that the area must find “some solution which balances the Arab need for self-esteem with Israeli security. I’m not sure it exists”. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

A 6 page paper discussing nine options that the United States has for dealing with the government of North Korea regarding North Korea’s commitment to military buildup and threatening language regarding nuclear capability. When the time comes for action regarding North Korea, the choices available to US decision-makers likely will be best left to the UN. North Korea is so hostile to the US that any US-based suggestion for resolution is likely to be rejected out of hand. A 3 page research paper that addresses female genital mutilation (FGM) as an ongoing global justice issue pertaining to women. Throughout the globe, women are still discriminated against and are cast into the role of second-class citizens, but on a more basic level, women -- worldwide-- are routinely the victims of institutionally sanctioned violence. In other words, it is considered "normal" to beat women, use them as little more than beasts of burden and mutilate their bodies -- all in the name of male dominance and privilege. In examining this issue, the most compelling issue of global justice in regards to women concerns the most basic of human rights, the right to body integrity. In the name of "chastity" and "purity" -- and despite new laws and UN prohibitions -- the practice of female genital mutilation is still ongoing in numerous countries. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

New Threats to the UN Security Council: This 8-page essay discusses the United Nations’ efforts to broaden the range of challenges that constitute threats to international peace and security, and whether this new trend is a positive development for the world community. Rather than simply waiting until a conflict arises and subsequently attempting its resolution, the necessity that the Council anticipates world aggression seems to be the New Order. As a result, today’s Security Council members valiantly continue in their efforts to protect international security. Like good parents they seem to be trying to stay one step ahead of recalcitrant offspring. Bibliography lists 8 sources. SNUnatio.doc

A 9 page research paper that discusses political issues in Canada during the early cold war era. There is a prevalent Canadian national ideology that Canada is 'altruistic, nice, unmilitary and without territorial ambition' (Dawson, 2003, p. 629). In his review of a text by S.M. Maloney, Dawson (2003) relates that Maloney's thesis in this work is that this idea originates with the idea that Canada's approach to maintaining national security during the Cold War revolved peacekeeping and the nation's role in UN peacekeeping missions (Dawson, 2003).
