North Korea is so hostile to the US that any US-based suggestion for resolution is likely to be rejected out of hand. It still has been showing up in the newspapers, though the news articles discussing it have not been occupying any page one space of late. It remains to be seen what ultimately will transpire in North Korea. For the present, there is only speculation and reports of events and news about business prospects and concerns about North Koreas emerging nuclear capabilities. The countrys promise not to further its missile progress during 2003 is about to expire, however, and the US soon will need to determine the best way to deal with the threat that North Korea wants to be. There are several avenues of action that the US could take. The purpose here is to assess nine of them. Military Action It seems that the North Korean leaders suddenly and without warning suffered some sort of breakdown of all logic, claiming that the US has plans of immediate war and that it is imperative that North Korea build up nuclear weapons. The state-controlled newspaper said recently that "Crushing the U.S. plot to attack North Korea is a very important issue related to peace and safety of Asia and the world, the existence and future of mankind" (Yoo, 2003). Direct military action on the part of the US is unwise in that its primary effect would be to give credence to North Koreas outlandish claims.
