the most difficult jobs on earth, but everyone assumes its simple. This paper discusses the similarities between detective work and research/writing. Discussion A detectives job is to find the facts about a crime, assemble them so that a guilty party can be identified, and make certain the evidence is not contaminated so that the DA can build a case without their being any doubt that there was tampering. It requires painstaking attention to detail, sometimes long hours, and often a lot of work for little reward, at least at first. Similar skills are needed by anyone researching and writing. The writer may be doing a work of fiction, a research paper, a non-fiction article, a non-fiction book, or any number of projects. Unless the work is something that the writer is making up entirely (i.e., a science fiction or fantasy story for instance), it will benefit from some grounding in fact. So doing good research applies to all writers no matter what theyre doing. But doing good research requires a great deal of skill. Today, the Internet has made research much easier, but it has also complicated it. Because anyone can say anything on the Internet, it can take a lot of searching to wade through the junk, the rants, the personal opinions and the outraged screaming from both ends of the political spectrum to get to information that is unbiased, accurate and fairly up-to-date. This is similar to the detective searching through all the extraneous clues and distracting information to get to whats really important and relevant to the case. Just like a detective can develop sources and learn when to "trust his gut" on the street, a researcher can develop a feeling for which sites to trust and how much time to spend on any one source. ...
