and contrast to the infamous Booker T. Washington because his theories, social ideals, and dreams for the African American people were very different from Washingtons. While he was surely not
as docile, in the opinion of many, as Washington, he stood as a figure that could not be ignored and a figure that truly spoke, and still does speak, to
the soul of the African American people. The following paper examines his life, his work, and his influence. W.E.B. DuBois The
years that DuBois grew up in are years that saw great turmoil in relationship to black leadership. One author notes that, "During the four decades following reconstruction, the position of
the Negro in America steadily deteriorated. The hopes and aspirations of the freedmen for full citizenship rights were shattered after the federal government betrayed the Negro and restored white supremacist
control to the South" (Gibson , 2007). In essence, though free, the African American was not in any sort of positive position in society and equality for the African American
was needed, but still a long way off. "William Edward Burghardt DuBois....was born on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. At
that time Great Barrington had perhaps 25, but not more than 50, Black people out of a population of about 5,000" (Hynes, 2007). This is an important fact because it
indicates that DuBois was born in a place where there was likely very little racist conditions, or very little in comparison to the south during the same period. However, there
seems to have been a subtler form of racism that spread its venom subtly, rather than obviously, in this region and it evidently affected DuBois in turning him into a
