(Ziska). Van Gogh saw a reverse reproduction of this print on the cover of a magazine, the Paris Illustre, which was published in May of 1886. From this magazine
cover, Van Gogh made a tracing, incorporating a grid, which facilitated transferring the tracing to a larger canvas (Ziska). The following discussion contrasts and compares Van Goghs Courtesan to its
inspiration, the artwork of Japan during the Edo period. This shows not only how Van Gogh incorporated features characteristic of the Edo style in this own work but also how
Van Gogh made these conventions uniquely his own. While Van Gogh was inspired by the Edo work, his Courtesan is much more than merely a copy of Eisens, but
is a composed picture in its own right, as it combines several motifs that are borrowed from other Japanese prints (Ziska). For example, in Van Goghs painting, the image of
the Japanese woman is "framed" by a pond that features water lilies, reeds and bamboo, as well as two figures in a boat, two frogs and two cranes (Ziska). The
