to an ideal, or a perfect state of being, one can imagine that it would be something special. For hundreds of years, there has been fighting and chaos in the world. Many great thinkers throughout the years have surfaced and tried to come up with solutions to the economic and social problems that exist. In the fifteenth century, the answer seemed to be the discovery of a new world and later, government types would come up and be contemplated. Is colonialism working? Is democracy the answer? Of course, to some extent, democracy first surfaced in ancient Greece. In any event, the concept of communism would come from Karl Marx and Freidrich Engelss brains and that was something that seemed to fix the problems evident in a capitalist world, at least for a fleeting moment in the early part of the twentieth century. Communism would go on to be a dismal failure. Communism was supposed to bridge gaps between the rich and poor. This was a consideration throughout the ages as it seemed that the rich always ruled. And throughout the centuries, there have always been people to come up with new ideas. Rousseau also had a concept of a utopian society. Many other philosophers too laid out their plans for the ideal society. In comparing and contrasting Marx and Rousseau, differences as well as similarities, emerge. II.
