There is no question that in recent years gays, lesbians and bisexuals have received far more attention and also more acceptance within the context of society in general, but the issue of transgenderism remains one that has not been the focus of sufficient attention. Society has imposed strict gender guidelines and therefore the decision to become transgendered in our society is one that is made with awareness about the social norms that will be refuted. Therefore, to accept the consequences of transgenderism reveals very significant reasons for becoming transgendered in the first place. The term transgender was first developed in the late 1980s, primarily by men not fitting the transvestite label since it did not fully describe their need/desire to live as a woman (Carroll, Gilroy, and Ryan, 2002). Therefore, trasgendered refers to persons a wide variety of persons, such as those who are transsexuals, cross-dressers, transvestites, intersex persons, and also those who are not interested in passing as their external perceived gender (Carroll, Gilroy, and Ryan, 2002). Biology is believed to play a significant role in the development of the transgendered nature of an individual, but socialization and personal choice are also significant elements as well. Therefore, transgenderism is truly the end result of the combination of these various components. Transgederism is a growing concern for both men and women who feel they do not identify necessarily with a particular gender but alternatively dont want to feel ostracized by society either. Their dilemma is real and can result in a great deal of personal suffering and confusion. Clearly, the issue of gender itself is a broad-based and complex issue. ...
