the Union fold (PG). It was as simple as that and perhaps because of the mentality that the Union just had to win, it did. That mentality might have just
been the impetus which got General Sherman through Georgia with continual victories. The mentality that everything had to be crushed, that a total destruction of other territory was the goal,
signified a change in the conduct of warfare. In fact, Shermans march to the sea clearly showed an important turning point in the evolution of warfare as since then, every
major war employed some of these same ideas. In delving into the details, it will be shown that indeed, Shermans use of a total war strategy demonstrated a significant shift
in ideology. First, the concept of total war needs to be addressed. Total war is an all-encompassing co-ordination of the government, the military and the people as well(
"The spectre" 53). It is thought that total war brings change which may be adverse and beneficial at the same time (Hennessy 464). It causes social change because it
is disruptive and destructive and tests social institutions (464). It is a catalyst for social participation by the traditional underclasses and also poses a psychological challenge in that it demands
a search for meaning and survival (464). Thus, total war gets to the heart of the people. It does not just defend or do the least harm. Rather, it tears
