The wooden churches of the Ukraine are some of the most fascinating archaeological examples of all time. These structures emphasize the point that, like many arts, architecture encompasses not only utilitarian concerns but also aesthetic concerns. Constructed of the simplest materials, these churches have endured the centuries to be ever-persistent reminders of a simpler time when, although tools and equipment were quite basic, great wonders could be produced by skilled craftsmen. The master builders built hundreds of these churches in communities all over the Ukraine. Each region shared many similarities with the other yet there were also several distinctions. As their lingering majesty affirms, the log churches of the Ukraine were not simply utilitarian but objects of great beauty. Another point that they emphasize is the degree to which architecture is shaped by cultural factors, cultural factors that vary in accordance with both time and place. To understand the wooden churches of the Ukraine, therefore, we most strive to understand not just the structural aspects of their construction but also the artistic and cultural concepts that are interwoven into that construction.
