trial of John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley was the man who attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan and at the end of the trial the jury found him not guilty. He
was seen as mentally unstable and thus was able to plead insanity. The following paper examines the issue of justice in the trial of John Hinckley Jr. The
Trial of John Hinckley Jr. As noted in the introduction, there were many people who felt that justice was not served in the case of Hinckley, or according to one
author, "An ABC News poll taken the day after the verdict showed 83% of those polled thought justice was not done in the Hinckley case" (Linder, 2001). Many argued it
was because the jury, almost entirely black and male, chose to accept the claim of his insanity and also went with a not guilty plea. However, it is because
of the insanity possibilities that the case is considered so controversial and confusing. Linder notes that, "The Hinckley trial highlights the difficulty of a system that forces jurors to label
a defendant either sane or insane when the defendant may in fact be close to the middle on a spectrum ranging from Star Treks Mr. Spock to the person who
strangles his wife thinking that hes squeezing a grapefruit." There were those who painted him as an all American type young man, but yet it is believed that by any
stretch of the imagination he was clearly not in the best of mental health and he was troubled (Linder, 2001). What was wrong with him was perhaps unknown but the
