An understanding of the culture in which one is working or managing is essential to the companys success. Lenartowicz and Roth commented that "understanding the nature and influences of culture is central to international business" (1999, p. 781). These authors go on to say that "culture is an important construct and that the field is in need of additional understanding about culture and its effects" and cite Dunning who said, "firms which are best able to identify and reconcile (cultural) differences, or even exploit them to their gain, are likely to acquire a noticeable competitive advantage in the marketplace" (Lenartowicz and Roth, p. 781). Differences in culture are found between any two countries, including two that have English as their dominant language. Too many managers think that if the members of a country speak the same language that they will work well under the same management system. This is certainly not the case and the awareness in academic literature as well as in the practitioner press attests to the need for companies to understand the cultural differences if they are to continue to succeed.
