An 8 page research paper that, first of all, examines the difference between leadership and management concepts while also providing a personal philosophy of leadership. From this orientation, suggestions are then offered that illustrate how team building concepts and organizational theory, including change theory, can be applied to nursing clinical practice. Contemporary nursing is a constantly advancing, changing field in which knowledge is advancing in all specialty fields at an accelerated rate. In order for nurses to continue to offer the optimum in evidence-based patient care, there must be a synthesis between leadership and management that encourages nurses to keep "at the top of their game" and thereby reach their full potential as healthcare professionals. While closely related there is a distinct difference between management and leadership skills. Good management provides the essential foundation from which leadership strategies can be launched (Gokenbach, 2003).
As this indicates, the two concepts are interdependent, which makes it possible for someone to be a capable manager, but nevertheless demonstrate poor leadership skill due to a failure to
confuse these concepts. Management is an identifiable process, while leadership evolves from a philosophical standpoint (Gokenbach, 2003). A good leader, on the other hand, cannot bring about effective change without
a concrete understanding of change theory and process analysis, which are both examples of management functions (Gokenbach, 2003). The challenge of nurse management is to motivate a staff to "embrace
change, understand the reasons for this change and hare a vision of the future" (Gokenbach, 2003, p. 8). The catch is that these goals are not achieved without leadership.
II. Personal philosophy of leadership Gokenbach (2003) points out that exceptional leaders typically demonstrate five characteristics that support the development of successful leadership. "True leaders challenge the process, inspire a
