the first prime time war that Americans were able to see first hand and there were remarkably few American casualties. CNN was there and in fact it is believed that it had a viewership of more than one billion people worldwide (Hall, 1997). Hall (1997) tells it this way: "Chances are that on Jan. 16, 1991, you were glued to your television set watching in awe as Allied planes and Iraqi anti-aircraft guns lit up the skies over Baghdad. And for the longest time, the only source for that spectacle was CNN" (33). CNN televised the popular war. In fact, it seemed as if one could miss the war if they blinked. People saw the bombs drop on television, but the reality is that the Gulf War was a real war. Many remember Vietnam as the last major conflict before it, but the Persian Gulf War was nothing like Vietnam. While it officially started on January 16, 1991, and would end on April 6 of the same year, it should be noted that things would heat up before the ball dropped on January 1, 1991. During 1990, Iraq would invade Kuwait and declared it a province of Iraq ("The Persian," 2005). This was clearly illegal and those in the Middle East worried that he would try to take over more nations. Certainly, it was a situation that the world could not tolerate. President Bush thought that Iraq was planning to invade Saudi Arabia ("The Persian," 2005). Had Iraq done so, it would have seized control of oil reserves (2005). Saddam would begin to organize a multinational coalition in order to bring Kuwaits freedom and see the restoration of its legitimate government (2005).
