and generally believe everything they see and hear on the news, and they generally believe what they see in advertising and on television shows as well, even if they dont think they are truly believers. In essence, people may not believe what they are being told in relationship to a product, but they do believe that the person presenting that product is representative of women/men/children or whoever is presenting the product. In short, people believe, subliminally, what they are shown and told in many media forms. With that in mind the following paper examines the influence media has on the body image people possess, how people feel about their appearance and what they believe in relationship to physical appearances concerning themselves and others. The Media and Body Image When people think about the media and body image, as it relates to the bodies that are presented in the media, it is perhaps just generally accepted that the bodies of people on television are the ideal. At the same time these body images are perceived as average and very desirable. But, in all honesty they are not bodies that represent the average in the United States. One needs only look around them in, perhaps, a grocery store and see that most people look nothing like the people on television. One need only look at statistics concerning obesity in the nation and they will understand that the majority of people do not fit that body presented in the media. The body image seen in the media, and media generally refers to advertisements, magazine articles, television shows, and films, is unrealistic for most people.
