One way that this was seen was in the change in fashions, hemlines changed and there was a movement towards more boyish looks where hair was worn shorter with more masculine styles such as bobs and clothes were shorter and freer. There were also changes in behavior with more liberalized behavior patterns observed, this included increased smoking of cigarettes which had been formerly mainly a male activity. However, there were also limits, as when any change occurs there will always be resistance that will make itself felt. One of these was seen as a constraint in the 1928 obscenity trial concerning the publication "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall, making it difficult for heterosexual women to carry on wearing fashions which were to become associated with lesbians, which associated the mannish behavior and boyish fashions with perversion and made it unpopular. There were also further limits based on the way women were seen, there were constraints in the way women did not have, and wanted to gain the vote. However, the influence in the workplace was more permanent and women did not return to the home in the same way as before, many were more reluctant than in the past to go into domestic service ...
