ILLITERACY There are a number of social and environmental factors that encourage juvenile delinquency. One in particular, however, is overlooked more than the rest: illiteracy. Indeed, an adolescent individual who is suffering from analphabetism can display myriad socially unacceptable behaviors; within this mindset, juvenile delinquency has been found to be a prevalent occurrence. It can readily be argued, however, that a significant number of adolescents engage in some form of juvenile delinquency at some time during their formative youth without the added burden of being illiterate. In this case, motivation for such behavior is often placed upon an unstable home life or other social factors. Aggression is one of many emotions harbored by illiterate adolescents. Inasmuch as they are not typically capable of expressing themselves like their literate counterparts, ill-educated adolescents often find themselves seeking alternative means by which to vent their anger, which can translate into juvenile delinquency. It is important for the student to realize that aggressive youth present a specific challenge to society inasmuch as their behavior must be maintained in such a way that does not inadvertently antagonize the situation. Authorities are often faced with the grim reality that nothing they say or do will ultimately help diffuse the individuals aggressive behavior if the primary source of agitation stems from illiteracy.
