that the innocent will be wrongfully punished, or that a guilty party might go free, but these are the risks associated with having a robust and nuanced system that is
capable of ensuring a reasonable degree of fairness and objectivity in rendered verdicts. In the United States, the criminal justice system is carefully constructed so that each stage of the
process is supported by various contingencies and outcomes, with defendants rights being protected by fundamental Constitutional considerations. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the basic steps in the
criminal justice process. TO fully understand how the criminal justice process in the United States is constructed to provide a meaningful level of protection for defendants, it can be helpful
to look at the process through a particular context. For the purposes of this paper, suppose that the process in question is that which would be employed for a criminal
charge filed in a state court. This allows for a careful examination of the three major steps in the criminal justice process: pre-trial, trial, and appeals (Washington State Department of
