The story of the Chinese immigrant Chan Sam and his concubine May-ying, their daughter Hing and Chan Sams wife in China, the book introduces Westerners to a culture that co-exists with theirs but remains exotic and unknowable. This paper discusses the relationships among the three women. Discussion The book begins in the 1920s, so that the great events of the 20the century - the Depression and World War II - play a central part in the story. Like many other Chinese, Chan Sam leaves his wife Huangbo in China while he goes to Canada to seek his fortune in the country the Chinese call "Gold Mountain." Shortly after, May-ying is sent from China to become his concubine. She works in a tea shop during the day; shes beautiful and popular and it seems that their relationship is a happy one. May-ying becomes pregnant and delivers their first child, a girl they name Ping. A second girl, Nan, followed soon after. The interesting thing is that despite the fact that they were creating a family, neither May-ying nor Chan Sam felt that their life in Canada was anything but a temporary arrangement while he made enough money to insure a good life back in China. The strain between the two begins to show, however, as May-ying criticizes Chan Sam when he "kibitzes" as his customers play mah-jongg; he makes remarks that give players hands away and they grow angry. The business begins failing. Chan Sam receives a letter from his Huangbo, his "at home" wife, who wants to see him and the children. Hes thunderstruck because he didnt know she knew about May-ying, but he decides to go home for a visit. ...
