They called this new world America, and in it they built a culture far removed from that of their ancestors, a culture where everyone, including children, were entitled to a voice and opinion of their own. Visitors from what was then considered the motherland, the country of England, were notably dismayed by the obvious freedoms that American children were allowed. These children, noted the shocked colonial visitors, were often heard as much as they were seen and often conversed with as if they were "thinking human beings" (Trachtenberg 255). One wonders what these harsh judges might think if they could look upon the American children of today, children who were born in the midst of technological chaos and change and who have embraced this chaos and made it their own. The driving force behind this culture is television, and it is a force that is with them constantly and one that dictates almost their every move. II. A Different World, A Different Culture Prior to the introduction and widespread use of the television during the 1950s, children entered elementary school on a fairly even level of knowledge. Some entered the early grades with a rudimentary foundation of writing or phonics learned in the home, but most entered as clean slates, their education placed fully in the hands of competent teachers. Research has since shown us, however, that a childs learning potential is literally overflowing from the ages of two to six, ages during which the average child prior to the last half of the twentieth century was not exposed to organized levels of teaching.
