difficult. What looks good on paper or in theory can be quite costly to implement. This is what Sharon, the owner of a beauty parlor, learned when a valued customer stopped coming into the shop. Through a letter, Sharon learned that her customer had been in a serious auto accident and was unable to get her hair done because she couldnt make it up the stairs to Sharons salon, and the small spaces meant the customer couldnt get her wheelchair into the bathroom or the booth where she would get her hair done. The letter ended with the implication that if Sharon was not willing to make the changes necessary to accommodate this customer, the customer would have to go elsewhere. In addition, the letter implied that if Sharon did make the necessary changes, this customer would tell her friends in physical therapy, who might want to come as well. The advantages of making changes suggested by the customer are obvious - it would demonstrate that Sharon is a good corporate citizen, a good community citizen and that she shows enough compassion to her customers to be willing to alter her shops layout. Such demonstration of responsibility could net Sharon more customers as well - namely other women from physical therapy who may not feel accommodated by other salons. In addition, Sharon can, with her alterations, niche herself as a shop that caters to handicapped individuals; which would be a definite selling point in her favor.
